Eight fires that occurred over the past week at a construction site for the Yishun North Gaia executive condominium were determined to have been “intentionally started,” the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) reported on Wednesday, Nov 27.

According to SCDF, the fires took place between November 20 and November 27. In one instance, two individuals were hospitalized for smoke inhalation, though no other injuries were reported.

The fires primarily involved construction materials and furniture at various locations within the site. SCDF said the fires were quickly extinguished either by the fire service or by the workers on-site. Initial investigations suggest the fires were deliberately set.

The police have confirmed they are investigating the incidents after receiving reports.

In response, Sing Holdings, the developer of North Gaia, stated on Thursday that it had instructed its main contractor to halt work on the affected units as well as the units directly above and below them. Construction on other parts of the site is continuing as planned.

The developer added that the matter had been handed over to the police, and no action had been taken against anyone at this stage. A professional engineer has been instructed to assess the integrity of the affected units, with any necessary repairs to be made.

Sing Holdings emphasized that the site continues to comply with fire safety regulations and that additional security measures have been put in place to ensure only authorized personnel can enter. Workers have been briefed daily on fire safety protocols, including evacuation routes.

The completion timeline for the project remains unchanged, with the condominium expected to receive its Temporary Occupation Permit by June 2027. The development will consist of over 600 residential units.
